A spreadsheet software program is a computer version of a paper ledger sheet.

Just like a paper ledger, it has grid lines laid out on it made up of columns and rows.

The purpose of a spreadsheet program is to store numbers and automatically perform mathematical calculations such as adding and subtracting.

With the paper ledger, you have to hand enter all of the numbers and do all of the math by hand. Every time you change the numbers, you have to re-calculate the numbers on the ledger by hand. It is tedious and time-consuming and it is very easy to make errors.

With a computer spreadsheet program, you can set up the mathematical calculations so that they will be automatically re-calculated any time you change the numbers in the spreadsheet. The calculations are nearly instantaneous and the spreadsheet program does not make math errors.
