Entering Text Using the Formula Bar

First, open a new blank workbook in Excel.

  1. Click on cell A1 so it is highlighted. You should see A1 in the Formula Bar address indicator box when it is selected.

  2. Then click your mouse in the Formula Box. A blinking vertical line will appear to indicate that you can type in this box.

  3. Type your name in the formula box.

  4. Press the enter key. Your name will appear in cell A1.

Exercise:

  1. Open workbook1.xls
  2. Select cell A1.
  3. Type your name in the formula box.
  4. Save your workbook.

Entering Text Directly Into a Cell

  1. Double-click on cell A1. A blinking vertical line will appear in the cell indicate that you can type in the cell.

  2. Then type your name directly in the cell and press enter. Your name will then appear in cell A1.

  3. Click on cell A1 so it is highlighted. Notice that the text now appears in the cell and in the formula box.

Exercise:

  1. Open or switch to workbook2.xls
  2. Double-click on cell A1.
  3. Type your name directly in the cell.
  4. Save your workbook.
