A common problem in Excel is that a column is too narrow to display all of the text or information
stored in a cell. There are several different methods you can use to adjust the column width.
Autofit Selection:
To automatically widen the column to display all of the information:
- Select the column you want to adjust.
- Click on the FORMAT menu item and click on the COLUMN item.
- Click on Auto Fit Selection in the COLUMN drop down box.
Dragging the Column Width:
You can also adjust column width by placing your mouse cursor on the right edge
of its letter indicator. The mouse cursor will become a double-arrow when you have placed
it correctly. Hold the mouse button down and drag the column width to the width you want.
Instead of dragging the column width, you can simply select the column and double-click
on the double-arrow.
Entering a Column Width Value:
- Right click with your mouse to select the column you want to adjust. A drop-down menu
will appear.
- Click on the column width choice. Enter the column width you want in the
dialog box that appears.
Exercise:
- Open or switch to workbook1.xls if it is not already active.
- Enter the names and phone numbers of five people you know.
- Use the different methods of adjusting the column widths so the information is correctly displayed.
- Save your workbook.
